Cryptocurrency is generating significant buzz, both figuratively and literally

Residents in Bono, Arkansas are filing a lawsuit against a bitcoin mining facility next door that has been causing unbearable noise levels. Gladys Anderson, who bought her dream home in the area seven years ago for peace and quiet, described the noise as “torture” and compared it to military-grade torture. The noise comes from the 17,000 computer fans in the bitcoin facility. Neighbor Shane Markuson has been taking decibel readings and found that the noise reached a high of 82 decibels, which is comparable to a hair dryer. The noise has caused health problems for residents, including hearing issues, high blood pressure, and migraines. Anderson has contacted officials about the issue but believes that nothing has been done due to money being involved. Bitcoin mining requires a significant amount of power and generates a lot of noise. Arkansas passed a bill known as the “Right to Mine” bill last year, which prevents local communities from regulating these operations. However, even the bill’s chief sponsor, Republican State Senator Joshua Bryant, acknowledges that it needs fixing. He believes that not all bitcoin plants are noisy and that it depends on factors such as design and investment in being a good neighbor. It is revealed that many of the noisy plants in Arkansas are owned by Chinese companies with ties to the Chinese government. The “right to mine” bill itself was drafted by a bitcoin advocacy group called the Satoshi Action Fund. At least 50 bitcoin mining plants are planned in Arkansas, and residents are determined to fight against the noise issue through legal action.
