Clicker Games Expected to Experience Significant Decline Soon

Clicker games, such as Catizen and Tapswap, are anticipated to lose their charm once the current token releases occur. This sentiment comes from Andrew Saunders, Chief Growth Officer at SKALE Labs, who believes the excitement surrounding these games is unlikely to last.

Saunders noted a trend among players drawn to crypto idle clicker games—often referred to as tap-to-earn games—due to “airdrop speculation.” Many players are hoping for substantial crypto rewards from upcoming airdrops.

Clicker games have emerged as a recent sensation in the crypto space, with several simplistic titles achieving remarkable success this year. Notably, Notcoin, a play-to-earn (P2E) game integrated into Telegram, has become a leader in this genre.

“Their accessibility makes it easy for both seasoned and new users to participate. Many are also encouraging referrals, leveraging Telegram’s vast user base.”

Despite being relatively basic, one of the main attractions of these games is the potential for profit, which may not deliver as expected.

Token Rewards May Fall Short of Expectations

Saunders warns that new players might quickly lose interest after realizing their airdrops could yield minimal rewards, potentially only enough to cover a bus fare.

“I anticipate a notable user drop-off following the Token Generation Event for many of these games,” he stated, emphasizing that the limited supply of tokens linked to early players may not meet the expectations of the wider gaming community.

“Once the reality sinks in, many players may choose to disengage,” he added.

Saunders, who oversees growth at SKALE Labs—a layer-2 Ethereum scaling solution that aims for rapid, seamless gaming—highlighted that while they don’t specifically host clicker games, they do support various popular Web3 titles like Motodex, a motorcycle racing game, and the blockchain game Untitled Platformer.

Not all clicker games face doom, according to Saunders. He believes some titles could succeed if they adopt a more strategic approach, mentioning TOM and ZESH as examples that require less daily engagement and maintain smaller player bases—potentially allowing them to meet community expectations more effectively.

Review: Hamster Kombat

Although clicker games are not typically my area of interest and I find the clicking tedious, I decided to explore the popular Telegram-based game Hamster Kombat.

Hamster Kombat has recently crossed 300 million players and is gearing up for what it claims will be the largest airdrop ever in the crypto realm.

The premise revolves around managing your own cryptocurrency exchange as a hamster. Initially, I spent a significant amount of time trying to understand the game mechanics and objectives due to poor tutorials and instructions.

However, perhaps the essence of the game lies in the simplicity of just clicking.

After reviewing a few YouTube clips, I quickly learned the ropes. While it’s fundamentally a clicker game, the interactions feel more akin to running a business, as players accumulate points to invest in their exchange.

Establishing passive income streams is essential. At the outset, tapping to grow your funds is necessary before more substantial investments can be made.

Once some capital is amassed, players can purchase various exchange components, each generating tokens per hour—even during sleep. Higher-value investments tend to yield superior returns, contributing to the engaging nature of the game.

For example, securing a marketing department for 1,000 taps can generate 70 tokens hourly.

Earning Tokens Passively

If players rest for eight hours, they could potentially earn 560 tokens from that single investment alone. Other investment options include a support team, IT specialists, and unofficially, partnerships that promise significant token rewards.

With a substantial player base eagerly awaiting the anticipated launch of the HMSTR token, the intrigue surrounding this game continues to grow.

While the details regarding the HMSTR token remain scarce, the prospect of the largest Web3 airdrop, as previously announced, adds to the excitement.

In conclusion, even if the crypto rewards are uncertain, the game’s design is engaging, offering a glimpse into building a business empire.

Potential for Web3 Gaming as a Side Income

Playing Web3 games might soon be more lucrative than certain gig economy jobs, according to Joseph Cooper, CEO of Earn Alliance.

“In the future, gaming through Web3 will surpass typical avenues for passive income,” Cooper stated.

However, players are keen to understand if real wealth can be gained through Web3 gaming.

According to Cooper, the definition of “rich” can vary widely depending on individual circumstances and locations.

For instance, the blockchain game Axie Infinity previously provided substantial income for users in developing countries like the Philippines and Venezuela.

Nevertheless, mere participation in Web3 games is insufficient; players must demonstrate a certain level of skill to earn a sustainable income.

Cooper also highlighted recent developments, such as the International Olympic Committee’s decision to host the inaugural Olympic Esports Games in Saudi Arabia in 2025, indicating a rising potential for gamers to earn significant income.

The collaboration between the IOC and Saudi Arabia will span 12 years, celebrating the growing relevance of Esports. “This partnership reflects our commitment to the interests of young people today, and we’re writing a new chapter in Olympic history,” said HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal.

The event will unfold in Neom, a forward-thinking city enhancing digital experiences, including high-speed internet and virtual reality technologies.

“As Esports earns recognition within the Olympic framework, Web3 will unveil new career paths for competitive gamers,” Cooper explained.

Recently, Earn Alliance launched an “engagement as a service” initiative, offering rewards to players while enabling developers to beta-test new projects.

Saunders forecasts significant advancements in Web3 gaming for the current year.

“2024 promises to be monumental for web3 game distribution, as several well-funded projects prepare for early testing phases, resulting in an unprecedented surge in active user engagement.”
