Bitcoin Seized in Unique Scottish Robbery Case

A landmark ruling in Scotland has seen the seizure of Bitcoin for the first time, stemming from a robbery case where a woman was assaulted using an unusual weapon—a Toblerone chocolate bar.

In a significant development, Scottish authorities seized 23.5 BTC from an individual connected to a home invasion that took place in March 2020 near Glasgow. This case marked a significant evolution in how stolen cryptocurrency can be traced and managed.

According to reports, three assailants armed with a machete and a Toblerone entered a residence in Blantyre. One of the men assaulted a woman while the victim was forced to transfer Bitcoin.

The Assault and Its Aftermath

During the home invasion, one assailant beat the woman with the personalized Toblerone and threw her into a bedroom. The victim recounted waking up to find a man with a machete, compelling him to authorize the transfer of Bitcoin.

The attacker then made a threatening gesture with the Toblerone before the trio fled the scene.

John Ross Rennie, identified as the “technical brain” behind the operation, denied any active participation, claiming that a relative coerced him into managing the Bitcoin involved. Nonetheless, the Edinburgh High Court judge noted Rennie’s critical role in facilitating the theft of cryptocurrency.

Legal Proceedings and Bitcoin Valuation

On September 3rd, the court determined that the seized Bitcoin could be converted into cash, amounting to approximately 109,601 British pounds (around $144,017 USD). This value reflects the Bitcoin’s worth at the time of the crime, which stood near $5,400 per Bitcoin.

In light of the circumstances, Rennie received a sentence of 150 hours of community service along with a six-month supervision order.
